Institute of Preventive Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1984. It now consists of a post-doctoral research center and six disciplines: Epidemiology and Health Statistics; Occupational and Environmental Health; Nutrition and Food Hygiene; Toxicology; Maternal and Child Health; and Social Medicine and Health Service Management. The Institute carries out scientific research mainly in six orientations including Nutrition, Food, Health and Chronic Disease Prevention; Health Informatics and Policy Research; Environmental and Occupational Exposure and Health Effects; Social Psychological and Behavioral Factors and Mental Health; Prevention and Control of Severe Infectious Diseases; and Emergency Warning/ Global Health.

Currently, the institute has 64 research fellows, of which 22 are professors; 23 associate professors; and 19 lecturers. Among them, there are two winners of the Distinguished Young Scholar of NSFC; one nationally recognized teacher; one State Academic Degrees Committee member; three New Century Excellent Talents approved by the Ministry of Education; one Pearl River Scholar; one winner of the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations award; three winners of the Guangdong Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertations award; and eight introduced talents in the One Hundred Plan of Sun Yat-sen University.

The Institute, supported by the School of Public Health, is equipped with advanced instruments and equipment for routine scientific research. The Institute has undertaken more than 70 scientific projects of all kinds with research grants of over 30 million yuan and published more than 80 SCI papers every year. The research results have won the Provincial Scientific Technology Award with first prize twice and second prize once.

The Institute takes an active part in academic exchanges and cooperation. Teachers from the Institute often participate in foreign academic meetings, visits, exchanges, and scientific research cooperation. Meanwhile, the Institute has also held several important international academic conferences. Moreover, the faculty of Institute presented more than 40 plenary lectures and invited lectures in international and national academic meetings.
