School of Public Health

 

The antecedent of the School of Public Health was the Office of Hygiene, which was set up in 1956 and developed into the Department of Public Health in 1976. It was renamed the School of Public Health in 1986. The school consists of five departments (Department of Preventive Medicine, Department of Nutrition, Department of Maternal and Child Health, Department of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology, Department of Health Service Management), and two centers (Health Inspection and Quarantine Center, Teaching Laboratory Center).

Taking the cultivation of sophisticated professionals in Public Health and Preventive Medicine as the fundamental task, the school has made great progress in student education, scientific researches, talent cultivation and discipline construction over the past 40 years. Its first-level discipline, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, got the fifth place in the 2012 China Discipline Ranking.

Currently, the school has approximately 1450 students on campus. About 140 undergraduates get enrolled annually and the school offers Bachelor’s degree in two specialties (Preventive Medicine, Health Inspection and Quarantine). Junior students majoring in Preventive Medicine are entitled to choose their major orientation out from Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health, and Health Service Management. In addition, it recruits 200 graduates each year and offers eight specialties, encompassing Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, Toxicology, Occupational and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Maternal and Child Health, Social Medicine and Health Management, Health Inspection and Quarantine, Master of Public Health (Part-time and Full-time). The school was among the first batch approved by the Ministry of Education to launch the program of Master of Public Health, making it the most special and a pioneer program nationwide. The school has established 43 practice teaching bases and 5 training bases for graduates, meeting students’ demands of on-the-spot teaching and social practice. In the recent years, the school expanded its connection with world famous colleges and launched varieties of cooperative training projects. Its alumni mainly serve in health administrative departments, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Testing Centers for hygiene, Health Inspection Institutes, Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureaus, Quality and Technical Supervision Bureaus, Food and Drug Administrations, Preventive and Treatment Centers for Occupational Diseases, Maternal and Child Health Care Hospitals, Clinical hospitals and Health Education Institutes. They are found all over the country acting as dominant forces in public health, preventive medicine, health management and hospital administration.

The School possesses an energetic and high-quality academic team comprised of 68 full-time teachers, which includes 25 professors, 27 associate professors, 16 lecturers and 24 full-time researchers. The school has 29 doctorial supervisors, 65 full-time master tutors and 159 part-time master tutors. Among them, there are two winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, one teacher selected in “One Thousand Youth” Plan, one national famous teacher, one State Academic Degrees Committee member, three New Century Excellent Talents approved by the Ministry of Education, one Pearl River Scholar, one winner of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, two winners of Guangdong Pearl River Science Technology New Star, twelve introduced talents in One Hundred Plan of Sun Yat-sen University.

At present, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, the first-level discipline, has gained a doctor station and a post-doctoral research center, and it was rated as a Key Discipline by Guangdong Province. Toxicology was evaluated as National Second-level Key Discipline. Program of Preventive Medicine was honored as National Specialty by the Ministry of Education and Famous Specialty by Guangdong Province. Medical Statistics was awarded as National Excellent Course. The school has established four key labs, including Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health, Guangdong Provincial “Twelfth Five-year Plan” Key Laboratory of Health Informatics, Guangdong Provincial “Scientific and Educational Development for Health Care Project” Key Laboratory of Toxicology, and Guangzhou Municipal Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution and Health Risk Assessment. Besides that, the school sets up Guangdong Provincial Demonstration Center for Experiment Teaching, and six research centers and bases (Guangdong Provincial Institute of Preventive Medicine, Sun Yat-sen Center for Migrant Health Policy, Sun Yat-sen Research Center for Global Health, Rehabilitation Education Center for Child Autism, Food Safety and Public Health Research Platform, Key Lab of Health Technology Assessment, One Health Research Center, Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine Research Center). Among the teaching and scientific research bases established together with other health care departments of Guangdong Province, Zhongshan Institute (School of Public Health, Sun Yat-sen University) provides great support in cohort studies, chronic diseases prevention and treatment, health policy, policy for disease prevention and control, and practical teaching.

Based on high-level scientific research platforms, six preponderant disciplines have been formed after years of development and resources integration, including Nutrition, Food, Health and Chronic Disease Prevention, Environmental and Occupational Exposure and Health Effect, Social Psychological and Behavioral Factors and Mental Health, Prevention and Control of Severe Infectious Diseases and Emergency Warning, Health Informatics and Policy Research, Global Health. These disciplines take the leading position in domestic and make great contributions to the development of public health.

The school maintains collaborative relationships with many other research institutes of foreign countries such as the United States, England, Finland, Canada, Australia, Japan and Singapore. The school has appointed 30 national or international experts and scholars as honor-professors and visiting professors, promoting intimate international communication and cooperation in scientific research and talent cultivation in Public Health.
